WHAT IS SAGA?
The history behind the Spanish American Genealogical Association
SAGA stands for The Spanish American Genealogical Association. It was officially incorporated on May 29, 1987 as a a non-profit corporation. Under the leadership of Dr. Clotilde P. Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas. SAGA was established for charitable and educational purposes with a focus on gathering and developing Spanish genealogical materials and collections at the Corpus Christi Public Library and to promote Spanish genealogical research.
Since the association was established a substantial amount of collections and information have been obtained and provided to the Corpus Christi Public Library and to Corpus Christi Texas A&M. Books, journals, and other documents from these collections have been developed and provided to genealogists and historians for their research.
Furthermore, the objective of the organization is to promote research, collection and development of genealogical data of the earliest Spanish and Mexican settlers of the present South Texas triangle (Brownsville to Corpus Christi to Laredo below the Nueces River). SAGA books and materials are available at the La Retama Library and Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. SAGA is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization with over 45 members who meet monthly. SAGA seeks to preserve Hispanic heritage and history by offering educational workshops, speakers and field trips to members, students and other interested parties in Corpus Christi and surrounding communities in south Texas. Membership in SAGA is for a 12 month period effective January through December of each year. SAGA hosts a Statewide Hispanic Genealogy Conference every 8 to 9 years with the latest Hispanic statewide conference in Corpus Christi occurring in 2016. We are part of a network of nine (9) Hispanic Genealogy groups in Texas.
